A “10” for the Mallorca 312

The cyclosportive Mallorca 312 – Giant – Taiwan has turned ten and has celebrated in style with a multilingual peloton made up of 8000 participants led by Alberto Contador, wearing bib 312. The event has gone from being a dream for a group of friends who wished to ride around the perimeter of the island, to a cyclosportive consisting of 199 participants in its first edition, to becoming an internationally recognised event, considered one of the best cyclosportives in the world.

Previous honourees have also participated in this cycling celebration in 2019, namely: Miguel Indurain, Sean Kelly, Óscar Freire, Pedro Horrillo, Óscar Pereiro, Joseba Beloki and Ivan Basso. Upon crossing the finish-line, Alberto Contador said: “It’s been such an exciting experience. I came with the idea of completing the short version but, in the end, I became more and more inspired thanks to the people in the feeding zones and the atmosphere, in general. It’s spectacular. The first 150 are really tough, then it gets easier. The slogan “More than a gran fondo” really couldn’t be more accurate.” Contador arrived a few minutes after Miguel Indurain, who completed the race in ten hours and fourteen minutes.

Over the years, participation has increased, the organisation has become professionalised and now has 850 people working on the day of the event and 150 contracted companies. The cyclosportive’s economic impact has also grown, reaching 9 million Euros, leading to the deseasonalisation of tourism in the month of April and has also increased internationalisation, with 54 different countries represented among the 8000 participants.

The number of participants from Mallorca has increased yet again, with 2500 local riders pedalling through the island on roads closed-off to traffic in the tenth edition. 32% of the participants were Spanish, 30% British, followed by 17% German.

Milestone Series

In its tenth anniversary, the Mallorca 312 has presented its international project Milestones Series, with which it will export the successful event model that has made the Mallorca 312 one of the best cyclosportives in the world. Interest shown by other destinations has led to the opportunity of internationally expanding the Milestone Series league, which will be held in the UK, Germany and Scandinavia in 2020. The organiser 312 Bikes & Tours is also the organiser of the Gran Fondo Alberto Contador since 2018. The Milestone Series will be a global premium gran fondo portfolio held in iconic locations, with the same format and quality seal as the Mallorca 312.
