As the tradition goes, every year the Mallorca 312 – Giant – Taiwan honours the career of a former pro cyclist with the prestigious 312 bib that symbolizes the difficulty of the sportive. During the IX edition of the Mallorca 312, participants will have an opportunity to ride alongside Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodríguez, one of the greatest riders of the recent cycling history.

‘Purito’ Rodríguez (Barcelona, 1979) was a multi-talented rider with a focus on Belgian classics, one-week races and Grand Tours. In the beginning of his career he rode for the Spanish team Iberdrolawhile still being an amateur, and he joined the professional cycling in 2001 with the team ONCE – Eroski of ManoloSaiz. He continued in Saunier Duval and later in Caissed´Epargne – IllesBalears. His best years as a professional cyclist came with the Russian team Katusha from 2010 until his retirement in 2016.

During his 16 years as a professional cyclist, he reached the podium four times in the three Grand Tours: in the 2013 Tour de France he was third; in the 2012 Giro d´Italia he was second and in La Vuelta a España he was third in 2012 and second in 2015. He achieved 45 triumphs in total, 14 of which were 14 stage victories in the three Grand Tours and in one-week races like Vuelta a Catalunya, Vuelta al País Vasco and Vuelta a Burgos, and one-day classics like the Giro di Lombardia, a ‘monument’ of professional cycling, and Fleche Wallone, among others.

Since 2017 he is one of the staff of Bahrain Merida team as an ambassador and as a mentor for the youngest riders. He is also the organizer of his own sportive La Purito, which takes place in Andorra. Its fourth edition will take place on 5 August 2018.

The charismatic ‘Purito’ Rodríguez will not ride the 312 kilometres alone. There will be regulars Pedro Horrillo and JosebaBeloki riding along, former honouree guests of the Mallorca 312 – Giant – Taiwan.

The sportive will take place on 28 April 2018 with three different routes of 167, 225 and 312 kilometres of roads closed to car traffic.
